What Should a Resignation Letter Include?

A professional resignation letter in the UK should always include your intention to resign, your notice period and last working day, and a brief thank you. Optionally you may include your reason for leaving.

  • Clear statement of resignation
  • Your notice period and last working day
  • Brief thanks for the opportunity
  • Offer to help with the transition

How Much Notice Do I Have to Give?

Your notice period is usually set out in your employment contract. If your contract is silent, the statutory minimum notice period in the UK is one week after one month of employment. Check your contract before submitting your resignation.

  • Statutory minimum: 1 week (after 1 month employed)
  • Contractual notice: as per your contract
  • Immediate resignation: only in exceptional circumstances
  • Garden leave: employer may ask you to leave immediately

Can I Resign Without a Notice Period?

In general, you cannot resign without working your notice unless your employer agrees to waive it, or unless you are resigning due to a fundamental breach of your employment contract by your employer (constructive dismissal).

Should I Resign in Writing?

Yes. Always resign in writing — even if you verbally tell your manager first. A written resignation letter creates a clear record of your resignation date and notice period, protecting you if any disputes arise later.
